Peruvians are increasing their consumption of fresh coffee out of home at a rapid pace.
After a 2017 characterised by high temperatures due to the El Niño phenomenon, 2018 was a rather cold year. Although this was negative for products such as carbonates, sports drinks and juice, among others, it was positive for hot drinks such as coffee.
International coffee prices have declined beyond what could be expected by local producers, leading to even lower selling prices in an attempt to recover part of the investment in the crop. Some of the highly-indebted producers are beginning to replace coffee crops with coca crops in order to earn some income in these difficult times.
Despite the growing preference for fresh ground coffee, instant coffee still accounts for the majority of coffee sales in Peru. Given this, Nestlé Perú has a strong lead in coffee.
As a coffee producing country, there are many brands of fresh coffee in Peru. However, Exportadora Romex is the consolidated leader in this category with brands in different price bands.
