The COVID-19 crisis and related lockdown restrictions in the Czech Republic encouraged stronger retail consumption of coffee in 2020. Since foodservice outlets were required to shut for several months and peoples’ movement was limited by government restrictions, it resulted in more people staying at home with children and working from home, which supported the increased at home consumption of coffee in 2020.
In 2020, instant coffee also benefits from the COVID-19 pandemic and related restrictions. In 2019, instant coffee posted negative current value and retail volume growth in the Czech Republic, and in 2020 consumption is expected to grow slightly, supporting the positive growth of instant coffee.
Even though many Czech households started to economize their purchases in 2020, observing the arrival of lacklustre economic times, private label only saw slight gains in retail value share, since branded coffee was promoted intensively throughout 2020. While towards the end of the review period quality was emerging as a more important factor for consumers, as opposed to only price, the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in more focus on price.
As restrictions are loosened throughout the country, foodservice volume is set to experience strong double-digit growth in 2021. Therefore, retail volume is set to post much slower and possibly even negative growth in 2021, however total volume is set to increase at a similar rate in 2021 to that which was seen in 2020.
Demand for authentic coffee taste is a long-term trend, which will continue into 2021 and throughout the forecast period. In autumn 2019, Nestlé Cesko successfully launched the premium Starbucks brand within modern grocery channels.
Another trend that was observed in 2020 and is set to proceed into the forecast period is the increased demand for fresh coffee, with fresh coffee beans set to post the most dynamic current retail value CAGR in the forecast period. Towards the end of the review period, households were purchasing more coffee machines, which necessitates the use of either fresh coffee beans or fresh ground coffee pods.
