Coffee continued to post volume growth in retail and foodservice in 2017, with both channels complementing each other and having differentiated moments of consumption. Colombians are very traditional in the way they drink coffee, and still have a strong preference for black coffee, better known as tinto, and coffee with milk, but the development of the coffee culture is motivating the demand for more convenient and sophisticated products.
The instant coffee mixes category has been growing rapidly, benefiting from the busy and tight schedules that Colombians have and also from rising consumer sophistication. The most popular types of instant coffee mixes available are 2-in-1 (coffee with milk), 3-in-1 (coffee, milk and sugar), cappuccino and mocaccino.
With more consumers of coffee open to new experiences, companies are focusing their attention on the premium segment to make interesting launches. In April 2017, Nestlé de Colombia SA introduced Nescafé Artesano Santuario, the first instant coffee of single origin and bearing an ethical label owing to the brand supporting small cultivators from the region.
The coffee category in Colombia is led by domestic players such as Industria Colombiana de Café SA (Colcafé), Torrecafé Águila Roja y Cía Ltda, Casa Luker SA and Procafecol SA, which collectively held a majority value share in 2017. Among them, Colcafé has been able to maintain its leading position, supported by traditional brands, eg Café Sello Rojo and Colcafé, both of which are also available in fresh ground coffee pods format.
The number of discounters – there are around 1,000 outlets throughout the country – has continued to rise. Consumers of all incomes are attracted to these stores due to their low prices for basic products, including standard fresh ground coffee and instant coffee.
Café Quindío SAS, focused on premium coffee, is expanding strongly in consumer foodservice, opening new outlets there as well as increasing its number of retail stores. In 2017 it launched fresh ground coffee pods, which are suitable for the machines it is importing and for the Nespresso machines.
