Coffee is anticipated to perform exceptionally well to the pandemic in 2020, with both current value and volume sales rising notably. The main reason for this is due to the national lockdown that was implemented by the government in March which saw many employees working from home and school children receiving online lessons.
The foodservice industry has been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic and as a result will see volume sales declined drastically. Due to lockdown restrictions, all cafés, bars and restaurants -were obliged to close for a period.
Amidst the pandemic, innovations and new launchers have been somewhat non-existent as most players have been focusing on maintaining sales rather than new releases. However, second ranked player Vispak dede has tried to fight the crisis with an alternative strategy to other players.
From 2021 onwards, coffee is expected to quickly return to the previously established trends that were seen over the review period. This means that off-trade sales are expected to decline at the beginning of the forecast period, mirroring the decline seen in previous years.
Despite the increasing interest in coffee, in particular high-quality coffee, there are certain product areas that will remain undeveloped within Bosnia and Herzegovina over the forecast period. For example, instant coffee and instant coffee mixtures will remain largely undeveloped and will continue growing strongly only in the off-trade sector, as coffee shops and cafés primarily focus on more sophisticated types of coffee such as fresh ground coffee.
Over the forecast period, producers are anticipated to engage in more activities in order to capture more customers. Activities such as new product launches and aggressive marketing for existing brands is expected to be seen in the years to come.
