Nascent at the end of the review period, it competes with plant-based milk that can be added to plain coffee as offered by specialist coffee shops; the growing availability of barista standard milk alternatives with increased capacity for frothing further threatens the prospect of dairy substitution within coffee mixes and pods.
Incumbent coffee pod brands Nespresso and Nescafé Dolce Gusto, both from Nestlé, target different consumer groups, while the distinction is also accentuated by their sustainability efforts – although both brands advocate sustainable disposal and upcycling, the degree of facilitation by each brand varies. The premium-positioned Nespresso, which tends to target more affluent consumers, launched a #onepodatatime recycling programme, which ran from 1 October to 31 December 2022, allowing local consumers to return used capsules to Nespresso boutiques or to the delivery driver when subscribers received their orders.
