During these difficult and uncertain times, with consumers seeing a drop in purchasing power due to the impact of COVID-19 and inflation, companies are having to seek new opportunities to build and retain interest in their products. For example, while Nestlé (Thai) Ltd continues to dominate sales of coffee in Thailand it nonetheless continues to invest in new product development and innovations.
Fresh coffee beans and fresh ground coffee were long perceived to be products targeted at foodservice outlets like cafés and coffee shops but these channels faced a sudden upheaval during the pandemic as there was a shift in consumption to the retail channel. Companies experienced a massive decline in foodservice sales while they seemed to have a limited consumer base through the retail channel.
Fresh ground coffee pods saw explosive growth during the lockdown period, with consumers becoming more familiar with such products and their ability to provide a quick and fulfilling cup of coffee. Prior to the pandemic some consumers had become familiarised with these product from their appearance in some offices, and therefore with many people switching to working from home during the pandemic they looked to replicate the experience at home by investing in their own coffee machines.
