Other dairy is the second largest category in dairy products and alternatives in Cameroon in both retail value and volume terms. Furthermore, other dairy is dominated by sales of condensed milk and cream, with the other categories continuing to have negligible sales in 2021.
Nestlé SA’s Nestlé brand of evaporated condensed milk continues losing value share in 2021 as price sensitive consumers consider it a premium product due to its unit price being double that of the average unit price of its competitors. The brand is losing value share to Broli (NGM International BV) and private label.
Cream sees marginally positive retail value sales growth in 2021 after the negative growth experienced in 2020. Demand increased as a result of the multi-functionality of cream.
Other dairy is expected to see healthy constant retail value sales growth during the forecast period, driven by demand for condensed milk. Affordability will continue being the driver of condensed milk sales during the forecast period.
With demand for condensed milk already fairly mature among the low-income consumer base that accounts for the bulk of sales, players in other dairy are increasingly looking to middle- and high-income consumers to expand their products’ ranges and generate demand for a wider range of products. With the prices charged for cream and various other dairy products far too high for the majority of low-income consumers, and with these products by no means a traditional part of the Cameroonian diet, appealing to a modern, affluent urban consumer base is likely to be key to generating demand in product areas in which sales are still marginal.
Broli (NGM International) is present in numerous packaged food product areas across staples, snacks and cooking ingredients. Additionally, Broli is also sharpening its focus on condensed milk and is expected to perform well during the forecast period, with the brand having the potential to become a stronger force in other dairy in the forecast period as it continues to expand its product range and will therefore be able to benefit from economies of scale and compete effectively on price and ensure a wide distribution reach via both modern and traditional grocery retailers.
