While sales of other dairy remained extremely low in Kenya at the end of the review period, there remains some hope in the local dairy production industry that consumer demand for dairy products generally could become more sophisticated to the point that consumers will become interested in various types of other dairy products. Although limited product awareness has resulted in minimal sales and stagnant growth in the past, urbanisation, rising income levels and greater exposure to the cuisine and eating habits of people from other parts of the world due to wider internet usage all have the potential to create sufficient awareness of specific products categorised under other dairy to kickstart the process whereby the category will enter the mainstream.
Demand for dairy products generally in Kenya has traditionally focused largely on shelf stable products and this is not least to the low penetration of refrigeration appliances in the country. However, recent years have seen a marked increase in the household penetration of refrigerators and freezers, a development that has been reflected in a dramatic improvement in cold chain distribution systems, while all supermarkets and the majority of small local grocers now have fridges and freezers for storing and displaying chilled and frozen packaged food products at the appropriate temperatures.
Supermarkets is expected to remain heavily dominant in the retail distribution of other dairy in Kenya over the forecast period. These types of retail outlets are far more likely to stock the types of low-volume products that are categorised under other dairy, while small local grocers are more likely to limit their ranges of dairy products to high-volume product lines that are more likely to be seen as an essential part of the daily diets of local consumers.
