Other dairy saw several years of retail volume and current value decline prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, in 2020 retail sales returned to strong growth.
Despite the positive overall performance forecast for 2021, retail growth is not expected across all categories. For instance, retail sales of fromage frais and quark are set to return to decline in 2021, as the foodservice channel has been reopening across Spanish regions, leading to more consumption outside of the home and declining home consumption.
French multinational Danone is set to retain its leadership of other dairy in value terms in 2020. This is mainly thanks to its large offer of traditional chilled and shelf-stable desserts, which are the most popular other dairy products in Spain, under brands such as Danone para postres, Danet, Mousse and Vitalinea, which are deeply rooted amongst Spanish consumers.
After two years of notable retail volume growth, other dairy is set to decline from 2022 and throughout the rest of the forecast period; although due to price rises, retail current value growth is expected in most years. Consumers’ lives are likely to see increasing normalisation due to the rollout of vaccines to combat COVID-19, which is likely to lead to the easing of restrictions.
As in other dairy categories, Spaniards’ preferences are expected to increasingly move towards plant-based products for health and/or ethical reasons. This will be encouraged by the continued launch of dairy alternatives in different other dairy categories, as well as wider availability in retail outlets.
Reduced fat other dairy products or other dairy products containing added functional ingredients, such as protein, are expected to emerge with strength over the forecast period. The trend towards dairy products with a high protein content, which saw strong development in yoghurt towards the end of the review period, is already starting to extend into chilled dairy desserts and chilled snacks, and this is expected to continue over the forecast period.
