Consumer demand remains strong for other dairy, especially plain condensed milk given its use in coffee and tea, which are widely consumed throughout Malaysia. Plain condensed milk is widely available especially at neighbourhood stores like convenience stores (eg 99 Speedmart), local supermarkets (eg TF Value-Mart and Econsave) and independent small grocers.
While coffee whiteners continues to see steady growth in 2021, supported by the increased amount of coffee being drunk at home, its overall sales remain low. Coffee whiteners tends to see little in the way of new product development while demand remains relatively niche as local consumers tend to prefer plain condensed milk in their tea and coffee.
A key challenge for players within the dairy industry since the outbreak of COVID-19 has been in ensuring stock levels can be maintained, with some imported products suffering due to tight border controls. As such, this has given an advantage to players who produce their plain condensed milk locally – such as Fraser & Neave Holdings Bhd, Etika Holdings Sdn Bhd and Malaysia Milk Sdn Bhd.
Plain condensed milk will continue to account for most sales within other dairy; nevertheless, the category could face some challenges as the country starts to come out of enforced hibernation. Once the government eases its restrictions and consumers start to return to cafés, restaurants and bars this could lead to consumers drinking less coffee and tea at home.
Other dairy is likely to continue suffering from a lack of product innovation, with many of these products having already reached maturity. Leading players such as Fraser & Neave Holdings Bhd and Malaysia Milk Sdn Bhd are expected to instead focus on new product development in drinking milk products due to high demand for milk consumption such as new variants in flavoured milk drinks.
Once COVID-19 restrictions ease and Malaysia rolls out its vaccination programme consumers will start to return to foodservice outlets, which have been hit hard by the pandemic. Given the protracted nature of the pandemic there is a huge desire to start eating and drinking in cafés, restaurants and bars again, with many people having grown tired of consuming all their meals and drinks at home.
