It is expected high inflation will continue to dampen demand across womenswear in 2023, hence growth in total volume sales is projected to be slower than in 2022. However, as inflation starts to come down and consumer confidence and spending power improve, overall volume growth should stabilise in 2024 and remain reasonably solid thereafter.
With consumers likely to remain cautious in their spending decisions for some time, retailers offering attractive discount deals on higher-end and premium womenswear brands look set to perform well in Hungary over the forecast period. These include HalfPrice, which is expected to expand its presence in the country following the successful opening of its first store in mid-2022.
Despite the uncertain economic outlook for Hungary and the likelihood that inflationary pressures will continue to constrain purchasing power among much of the population in the short-to-medium term, demand for designer and luxury womenswear brands is expected to remain fairly robust over the forecast period. This is partly explained by the enduring status symbol appeal of such products, especially for younger female consumers whose fashion choices are heavily influenced by exposure to celebrity lifestyles on social media platforms.
