The pandemic-induced lockdown from March 2020 introduced by the Australian Government in an attempt to control the spread of the virus resulted in restrictive movement outside of the home, thereby reducing socialising opportunities and non-essential store closures. In addition, rising unemployment reduced consumers’ disposable incomes, adding another factor to a gloomy year for womenswear.
While the Australian Bureau of Statistics noted that demand for womenswear had improved in the second half of the year once the initial lockdown had ended, further lockdowns noted in July and August in Melbourne with cases of the virus once again escalating exacerbated the declines the category had already suffered. Demand for more formal attire such as dresses therefore continued to shift towards casual wear due to the home seclusion trend, with consumers preferring the comfort of lounge wear, tracksuits and leggings, also benefiting nightwear which recorded the lowest volume decline in 2020.
Premier Investments Ltd, which offers Peter Alexander, a leading women’s nightwear brand, retained its overall leadership of womenswear and was one of the few positive performers in 2020, benefiting from the stronger performance of women’s nightwear due to the home seclusion trend. On the other hand, like many other womenswear companies in 2020, second-ranked Noni B Ltd experienced declining value sales despite gaining marginal share, following a pre-pandemic impressive performance after the acquisition of Specialty Fashion Group’s brands, including iconic names such as Millers, Crossroads, Katies and Autograph.
