In 2021, total volume sales of RTDs saw another year of double-digit growth, driven by consumption by younger consumers of legal purchasing age, female consumers’ preferences in alcoholic beverages, consumer perceptions of RTD beverages, and the resumption of operations of night clubs, bars, restaurants, etc. Strong growth was reflected in both the off-trade and on-trade channels.
Rio by Shanghai Bacchus Liquor continued to dominate RTDs in 2021, accounting for over three quarters of total volume sales, and seeing strong double-digit growth and a slight share increase. Although it already had absolute dominance in the category, Shanghai Bacchus Liquor was still looking to expand, and launched new products and brands in 2021.
In contrast to the older generations in traditional environments, where they consume alcoholic drinks with high alcohol content during social gatherings, younger consumers of legal drinking age have new ideas of what to consume during their social occasions. They seek to release stress and become only slightly tipsy rather than drunk.
In 2021, Rio launched its “a drink for one” campaign to promote its seasonal winter products. Similar campaign ideas, with advertisements showing only one or just a handful of people drinking RTDs, are frequently used across RTDs.

RTDs
RTD stands for ‘ready-to-drink’. Other terms which may be used for these products are FABs, alcopops and premixes. The RTDs sector is the aggregation of malt-, wine-, spirit- and other types of premixed drinks. These drinks usually have an alcohol content of around 5% but this can reach as high as 10% ABV. Premixes containing a high percentage of alcohol of around 15%+ combined with juice or any other soft drink are included here. RTDs are usually marketed as products to be drunk neat, with ice, or as a cocktail ingredient. Fruit-flavoured, vodka-based spirits with an alcohol content of between 16-21% are classified here. Examples: Alizé, Ursus Roter, Berentzen Fruchtige, Kleiner Feigling.
