After a difficult year for RTDs in 2020, total volume sales bounced back in 2021, with a robust recovery in both on-trade and off-trade. The return of socialising fuelled recovery, especially for spirit-based RTDs which were most negatively impacted by the pandemic.
An important aspect to consider is the popularity of artisanal or home-made drinks in the Dominican Republic. For years, many home sangrias have been booming in this category and this popularity has now extended to other drinks, including mojitos and piña coladas.
Diageo Dominicana continued to lead overall RTDs in 2021 with its leading Smirnoff Ice brand in spirit-based RTDs. Smirnoff Ice has been in the market for a number of years, available through a number of distribution channels, both traditional and modern.
The easing of COVID-19 restrictions should favourably impact this category going forward as there will be more social occasions for these drinks to be enjoyed. Easy, convenient and visually attractive packaging will play a part in making these drinks more popular over the forecast period.
New product development and promotional activity could also fuel further grow of the category over the period to 2026. There was little promotion in this category during 2021, except for Barefoot canned wine, so future activity should attract consumers and drive sales.
E-commerce sales of RTDs are expected to continue growing over the forecast period, mainly driven by premium offerings such as Smirnoff Ice and Barefoot. Whilst growth could be impacted by the complete reopening of the on-trade channel, it is unlikely as consumers continue to prefer drinking at home.

RTDs
RTD stands for ‘ready-to-drink’. Other terms which may be used for these products are FABs, alcopops and premixes. The RTDs sector is the aggregation of malt-, wine-, spirit- and other types of premixed drinks. These drinks usually have an alcohol content of around 5% but this can reach as high as 10% ABV. Premixes containing a high percentage of alcohol of around 15%+ combined with juice or any other soft drink are included here. RTDs are usually marketed as products to be drunk neat, with ice, or as a cocktail ingredient. Fruit-flavoured, vodka-based spirits with an alcohol content of between 16-21% are classified here. Examples: Alizé, Ursus Roter, Berentzen Fruchtige, Kleiner Feigling.
