In a category that is dominated by wine-based RTDs, mainly by some of the best-known Spanish drinks, such as sangria and Tinto de Verano, spirit-based RTDs have make their way into the category. During 2022, spirit-based RTDs saw stronger growth than wine-based RTDs both in total volume and current value terms.
Within RTDs, a hard seltzer is a flavoured carbonated water with an alcohol content of roughly 5%. While this kind of beverage has already achieved great success in other countries, such as the US, Spain is yet to see similar success.
While big companies have had a sporadic presence, and have periodically entered and exited RTDs, small companies have been the ones working to expand the category in Spain. However, this is undoubtedly going to change as more companies begin to find RTDs an attractive category, and it is anticipated that there will be an increase in new product launches and entries over the coming years.

RTD stands for ‘ready-to-drink’. Other terms which may be used for these products are FABs, alcopops and premixes. The RTDs sector is the aggregation of malt-, wine-, spirit- and other types of premixed drinks. These drinks usually have an alcohol content of around 5% but this can reach as high as 10% ABV. Premixes containing a high percentage of alcohol of around 15%+ combined with juice or any other soft drink are included here. RTDs are usually marketed as products to be drunk neat, with ice, or as a cocktail ingredient. Fruit-flavoured, vodka-based spirits with an alcohol content of between 16-21% are classified here. Examples: Alizé, Ursus Roter, Berentzen Fruchtige, Kleiner Feigling.See All of Our Definitions
