The effects of the COVID-19 crisis are expected to linger in the short to medium term, with fears of a second wave and potential new local, regional or even national lockdowns at or near the front-of-mind of the government and consumers. High stress levels are likely to boost the demand for digestive ailments, not least for proton pump inhibitors and other indigestion and heartburn remedies.
Digestive remedies is, however, likely to see stronger competition from probiotics, as Spanish consumers take an increasingly proactive approach to health. As a result, more and more consumers are increasing their consumption of products that are free from artificial or chemical ingredients.
Generics remains a relatively unimportant factor in OTC digestive remedies in Spain. While doctors continue to be incentivised to prescribe generic drugs, they have yet to gain significant traction among local consumers.
