The digestive remedies category dropped into negative growth territory in 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. In general, digestive remedies were considered less essential products, and not top-of-mind for stockpiling, or as consumers took preventative measures.
While most of the digestive remedies category dropped into negative growth territory as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, antacids maintained a positive current value terms performance in 2020, albeit down on the previous year. The incidence of gastroesophageal reflux remains high, and is increasing in Taiwan.
Gelfos remained consumers’ top choice for indigestion and heartburn remedies in 2020, and while the product’s value share was slightly down on the previous year, it nonetheless remained the leading product by a notable margin. As well as benefitting from its efficacy, the brand remained active in terms of promotional support, seeking to address problems arising from high consumption of sweet foods and coffee among Taiwanese consumers.
As an increasing number of antacid products target symptoms such as hyperacidity, along with bloating and indigestion, consumption of antacids is becoming increasingly mainstream, and holds a growing share of the overall digestive remedies category. As a result digestive enzymes are expected to lose share to antacids over the forecast period.
Pre-COVID-19, due to lack of exercise, and insufficient fibre and water in their diets, consumers in Taiwan were suffering increasing cases of constipation. This was boosting demand for laxatives, which in 2018 was among the top five most-used medicines in Taiwan, according to National Health Insurance Administration.
Diarrhoeal remedies are mostly purchased before traveling, and demand was seriously affected due to the travel restrictions implemented around the world in first half of 2020. While some improvement in performance is expected over the forecast period, this category is expected to remain in negative growth territory.
