The Danish travel landscape is set to be severely impacted by the COVID-19 crisis in 2020, with retail value growth moving from 1% in 2019 to a decline of 45% in 2020. The Danish border closures from 14 March until 31 May led to a large decline of international travellers, with local tourism also falling due to lockdowns, and the ongoing fear of contracting the virus.
On 14 March, borders were closed and public transport restrictions imposed, with compulsory seat reservations for long distance and regional trains, with passenger capacity reduced by 80%. 18 March saw the closure of shopping centres, other than for access to pharmacies and grocery retailers.
COVID-19 is set to have a severe impact on airlines in Denmark, with borders closing on 14 March, when Danish citizens were also advised to travel back into the country. The impact of COVID-19 put a halt on most scheduled and charter traffic, closing smaller Danish airports, while bigger airports, such as Copenhagen Airport, sent most of their staff home.
In 2020, online booking players including Booking.com and Expedia had to deal with a large number of consumers requesting refunds, with systems put in place to deal with the logistics of refunding, or rescheduling plans.
The travel industry in Denmark is expected to be severely impacted by COVID-19 in 2020, and into the forecast period, as consumers remain cautious of travelling, and players continue to respond to COVID-19 restrictions.
