France’s travel industry is on the path to recovery in 2023 having already seen strong growth in inbound arrivals in 2022. Admittedly, the context is not ideal with Russia’s war in Ukraine, soaring inflation, and more cautious consumption habits remaining a significant obstacle to stronger growth.
Against all expectancies, airlines posted outstanding growth in 2022, with further strong growth continuing in 2023, both in terms of number of passengers but also in current value terms. This positive growth is despite most players stopping the use of discounts to sell seats.
Lodging, like airlines, has benefited from the significant recovery in the number of inbound arrivals (notably to Paris) but also from the return of domestic tourists too. The return of business conferences, meetings and other MICE events has also led to a great influx of business tourists in 2023 with this also providing a huge boost to lodging.
While still being largely positive, the results were a bit more mixed for booking in 2022-2023. This category has enjoyed a wave of sales in 2022-2023 as consumers have looked to re-book holidays which had been cancelled due to the pandemic, while other consumers have been keen to get away since the restrictions on movement have been lifted.
Despite the prevailing economic uncertainty and soaring inflation, the future for travel looks much less bleak than it did during the height of the pandemic. France is likely to see a further strong increase in the number of inbound tourists as well as a recovery of its domestic tourism market.
