2022 was a year of continued recovery for Croatia’s travel and tourism industry after 2021 signalled the start of a robust recovery from the severe declines seen in tourism flows and revenues at the peak of the COVID-19 the pandemic in 2020. The start of the recovery during 2021 was slow and constrained by various significant interruptions which the global travel and tourism faced due to ongoing measures designed to inhibit the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in numerous countries, including Croatia.
Airlines registered very strong growth in passenger numbers and revenues in 2022 as the category continued to record a robust recovery from the declines registered at the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. However, high inflation and, in particular, rising fuel prices caused by the tense geopolitical situation following the Russian Federation’s invasion of Ukraine continue to put huge pressure on the profit margins of all airlines operating in Croatia, especially the national flag carrier Croatia Airlines and this was a major factor impacting airlines in Croatia during 2022.
Lodging continued to register a recovery in demand and revenues during 2022, although both of these measures remained well below pre-pandemic levels at the end of the year. One factor working in favour of Croatia’s hotels during the year is that there are no longer any restrictions in place on the numbers of guests permitted in hotels or in rooms.
Despite strong growth in sales during 2022, booking failed to return to pre-COVID sales levels before the end of the year. After slow growth was registered in 2021 as certain travel restrictions remained in effect during the year, a more robust recovery was seen in 2022.
With the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions now seemingly permanent, the forecast period is likely to see a robust performance for Croatia’s travel and tourism industry. An eventual full recovery from the pandemic is expected to be seen during the first half of the forecast period, although this production remains contingent on there being no major new waves of the COVID-19 virus or new global pandemics and no major escalation of the Ukraine conflict.
