Country Report

Executive Summary

Sep 2019
Strong economy, rise in inbound travel and low cost carriers all fuel growth

Belgium continued to see growth across Travel in 2019, with the country continuing to recover from the impact of terror attacks in 2016. Inbound arrivals grew in the year, with a rise in Chinese tourists in particular benefiting sales, while there was also an increase in US visitors thanks to the opening up of more direct flights.

Consumers increasingly keen to shop around when buying online

Online travel platforms are increasingly easy to use and appealing, particularly in terms of mobile apps, while Belgian consumers are also increasingly comfortable shopping online. These two trends are both encouraging consumers to become more creative when shopping for travel online.

Low cost carriers and scheduled airlines take inspiration from each other

The rise and rise of low cost carriers are in turn encouraging scheduled airlines to compete on price due to the challenge being posed by this trend. Low cost carriers are increasingly popular in Belgium, due in large part to the development of Charleroi – Brussels South Airport.

Short-term rentals challenge budget hotels but face growing constraints

Short-term rentals are continuing to see rapid development, with smaller players such as HomeAway, Wimdu and Booking.com seeing fast growth in both sales and network and increasingly pushing to rival the more established Airbnb.

Expansion at Brussels Airport offers long-term growth potential

Travel is expected to see good growth in the forecast period, with premiumisation and digitalisation both supporting sales. These trends will particularly impact lodging and booking, with luxury and upscale hotels notably not only set to attract more consumers but also to further upgrade their offer.
