Travel in
Canada

Country Report

Executive Summary

Sep 2019
Growth due to weakened Canadian dollar and government support

Travel in Canada saw another good year in 2019, with growth by all measures. Inbound arrivals and domestic trips were positively impacted by the weakened Canadian dollar against the US dollar, whilst outbound departures saw a slower increase for the same reason, although growth was still evident.

Online travel becomes more dynamic and competitive

The competition amongst players in online travel is becoming more intense. Both direct travel suppliers and travel intermediaries are shifting their focus to the growth of online travel sales.

Competition from low-cost carriers forces scheduled airlines to adapt

The competition in airlines is strengthening. Although charter, low-cost carriers and scheduled airlines all saw growth in passenger numbers and current value sales in 2019, the competition from low-cost carriers and ultra-low-cost carriers increased strongly, along with the launch of new brands and new routes.

Continual evolution in technology and business models

Technology has been playing an increasingly important role in the travel industry in Canada. Both travel suppliers and intermediaries prioritise investments in technology to create a more seamless and frictionless booking experience for customers.

Growth expected due to new infrastructure and government focus

Canada is expected to continue to capitalise on its strong reputation as a tourist destination and see strong growth over the forecast period, with increases by all measures in both volume and current value terms. Continual investments in expanding airline routes, constructing new lodging options and offering packages to more remote areas of the country are likely to translate into more inbound arrivals and domestic trips, contributing to a strong performance.
