Domestic tourism continued to recover and reached 90% of its pre-pandemic level during 2022, supported by the easing of COVID-19 restrictions. With international tourism still running well below its pre-pandemic level, Kenyan tourist attractions have put more effort into attracting local visitors.
Airline passenger travel continued to recover in 2022 but stood at less than a third of its 2019 level in terms of passenger-kilometres. Full-service carriers dominate air travel in Kenya, accounting for almost three quarters of passengers, but they were also harder hit by the pandemic than their low-cost rivals, as the latter mainly serve domestic and regional routes.
Lodging (destination) recovered at an accelerated pace during 2022 on the easing of COVID-19 restrictions but still stood at less than two thirds of its 2019 peak. Meanwhile, the number of sites/outlets rose for the first time in three years but also remained well below its 2019 peak.
The recovery in booking accelerated in 2022, but retail constant value sales remained well below their pre-pandemic level. However, the Kenyan government still required passengers to have a negative COVID-19 PCR test certificate before arriving in the country during 2022.
The number of people travelling by air will continue to increase throughout the forecast period, exceeding its pre-pandemic peak by 2025. The opening of new routes and the introduction of additional flights on existing routes will play a significant role in this.
