Italy was one of the first countries worldwide to be hit by the outbreak of Coronavirus (COVID-19). It was also the most affected country in the first stages of the global pandemic.
The whole of Italy was declared a protected area by decree and placed under lockdown from 9 March. This extended the restrictions already in force in Lombardy and the 14 northern provinces most affected by COVID-19, with nationwide lockdown set to last from 10 March until 3 April.
The reopening of all Italian airports on 3 June and return of international airlines to Italy from mid-June 2020 have brought stronger sanitary and safety measures and protocols to reassure and protect travellers and staff. These include social distancing and the mandatory use of masks in airports and on-board, more rigorous sanitisation practices for airport and aircraft surfaces, the limiting of entry to airports to passengers and staff and temperature controls.
As the online/mobile trend is only expected to intensify, travel players are increasing their digital presence and developing “contactless” experiences. While this trend predates COVID-19, players are increasingly trying to reach travellers and be available anywhere/anytime via the internet or mobile apps.
COVID-19’s strong threat to travel and tourism in Italy requires the industry to innovate and renew itself. The industry and government aim to prioritise health and safety measures to maintain the country’s reputation and desirability as a destination in the short and longer term.
