Price increases due to inflation across travel and tourism products and services, including airline tickets, car rental, lodging, restaurants, attractions and activities, have impacted domestic, inbound and outbound tourists significantly during 2022. In addition, from December 2021, Brazilian tourists once again required a visa to visit Mexico, for health reasons and due to the increase in migration to the US.
Mexico has removed restrictions on flights, which make it a popular destination, especially among US tourists. The increase in flight routes from international destinations to Mexico, especially from the US and Europe, and to beach destinations boosted the recovery of the industry.
The number of room nights and average annual hotel occupancy are projected to see healthy growth over 2022. Tourism consumption by lodging in 2022, which represents the total expenditure of domestic tourists and international visitors, is also projected to grow strongly.
Travel intermediaries in Mexico have been strongly affected by the COVID-19 crisis, leading to the closure of some of the main booking players, such as Almundo Viajes and Travel Impressions. According to the Mexican Group of Associations of Travel Agencies and Tourism Companies (GMA), around 15% of travel agencies operating in Mexico closed their operations in 2021, largely due to the effects of the pandemic on travel and tourism.
All travel categories are expected to continue to recover from the slump caused by the COVID-19 crisis, although the pace of the return to pre-pandemic value (constant 2022 prices) sales is likely to vary. Mexico’s relaxation of travel restrictions, such as on flights and testing for the virus, should continue to see consumers from short and long haul source markets favour Mexico.
