From 25 March when lockdown measures began to be introduced, COVID-19 has severely damaged the travel industry in Saudi Arabia. Inbound and domestic tourism flows plummeted, with grounded flights from 15 March to 1 June leading to a sharp drop in international tourism.
Saudi Arabia locked down the capital Riyadh and its Islamic holy cities of Makkah and Madinah from 25 March. With the borders of the cities closed and a 4-hour curfew in place, travel restrictions were also imposed on 13 regions.
With non-essential planes grounded from 15 March to 1 June 2020, airline companies have seen steep revenue losses as inbound tourist flows dry up. Equally, the lower disposable incomes many Saudi and international consumers are facing as a result of the pandemic, combined with fears about the safety of flying, may slow recovery of the airline industry into the forecast period.
As inbound and domestic tourist flows drop as a result of COVID-19, online bookings have been hard hit in 2020. This is exacerbated by the continued uncertainty about the future, with consumers reluctant to book trips without flexible cancellation options.
Just like in countries around the world, travel in Saudi Arabia will be hit hard by the pandemic in 2020 and beyond. COVID-19 will impact all areas of travel, damaging demand for lodgings companies, flights, car rentals and online travel intermediaries as tourist flows plummet, consumers’ disposable incomes are lowered and many face safety fears over the spread of the virus.
