The travel industry is expected to see declines by all measures in 2020, due to policies implemented to try and limit the spread of COVID-19 in Indonesia. Flights from China were the first to be stopped, as this was where the virus first emerged, with Lion Air cancelling flights from the end of January onwards.
Due to the emergence of COVID-19 in China, Indonesia banned all flights from and to mainland China starting from 5 February. From 8 March, travel restrictions expanded to include affected parts of South Korea, Italy and Iran, and from then included further European countries.
Flagship Indonesian carrier Garuda Indonesia is expected to continue to lead airlines in 2020, and is set to see value share increases for all its brands – Garuda Indonesia (schedule and charter), Citilink and Sriwijaya Air (low-cost carriers). Second-placed Lion Mentari Airlines with Lion Air and Batik Air is also expected to see a strong share increase.
Traveloka Indonesia and Global Tiket Network are expected to remain the two leading players in both travel intermediaries and the online sales of travel intermediaries in 2020. However, they are both expected to see significant sales and share declines in this year.
In 2020 many consumers have been in “wait and see” mode in terms of travelling, carefully watching the development of the COVID-19 situation in the country and abroad. Even though many tourism categories have issued discounted products, these are not yet being well-utilised due to travellers’ fear of contracting the virus if they travel, as well as wanting to save money due to lower disposable incomes as redundancies have been seen and incomes cut.
