Country Report

Executive Summary

Sep 2019
Austrian travel industry continues to grow despite weakening global economy

Travel in Austria continued to see healthy growth across all areas in 2019, including inbound, outbound and domestic tourists, as well as winter, summer, cities, leisure and business. Growth rates were generally slightly slower than a year earlier across the board, although this should be seen against a backdrop of the effects on the global economy of the US-China trade dispute and the generally stagnating Eurozone economy, with Austria’s populous neighbours Germany and Italy, two major source markets, both seeing extremely weak economic growth.

Growth of online travel sales continues apace, with mobile sales even more dynamic

Online travel continued to profit from the growing number of residents in Austria showing a greater willingness to carry out research into and pay for their holidays online in 2019. This willingness is related to both the greater number of internet-enabled devices in usage and the greater access to broadband internet.

Lots of action in low-cost carriers as Ryanair resurrects NIKI Luftfahrt

The recent past has been an eventful one for the low-cost carriers category in air travel. There has been the collapse and disappearance of Air Berlin as well as the financial problems that beset NIKI Luftfahrt.

Airbnb’s strong growth could be stymied by planned new tax and registration regulations

Peer-to-peer online platforms continued to drive short-term rentals at the end of the review period. Airbnb – active in Austria since 2010 – has been seeing particularly strong growth since 2014.

Despite possible global headwinds, travel will continue to grow across all areas

Widely considered as a safe destination attractive for both the winter and the summer season, Austria is well positioned to continue its healthy growth in the forecast period. While growth rates in the number of inbound arrivals, domestic travellers and outbound passengers are all expected to see only a slight drop compared to the CAGRs recorded over the review period, value sales for all three measures will hold up pretty well over the forecast period.
