Following a gradual recovery in 2021, travel in Bulgaria continued to rebound from the slump caused by the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in 2020. In 2022, there were fewer travel interruptions, both domestically and globally.

In 2022, lodging continued its recovery from the COVID-19-induced slump, but retail value sales remained below the 2019 pre-pandemic level, with a full recovery not anticipated until 2026. Online value sales are set to outperform offline value sales in absolute and growth terms, supported by the rising offer and popularity of internet and mobile platforms/apps.
Despite some disruption caused by the Omicron variant, travel intermediaries reported strong revenue growth rates in late 2021 and the first half of 2022. This positive trend is set to hold throughout 2022, demonstrating that booking is indeed recovering from the pandemic and that travellers have had enough of lockdowns, limited movement restrictions and COVID-19 “blues”.
If the pace of the lifting of global COVID-19 restrictions is maintained, travel and tourism is set to continue its strong recovery and return to pre-pandemic levels across measurements during the forecast period. The under pressure disposable incomes of Bulgarian citizens remain an important obstacle that could limit the growth potential of travel and tourism in the short to medium term.
