Travel in Spain is seeing a return to pre-pandemic levels in Spain in 2023, with good weather over the Easter and May bank holidays boosting domestic tourism. Summer is also proving to be incredibly positive for inbound travel, as Spain has become a trending destination.
Airlines are facing a situation whereby the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, increases in fuel prices, and zero carbon policies, are ultimately pushing up costs which are resulting in higher average ticket prices being paid by consumers. On the other hand, this is proving to be a reasonably low deterrent for consumers who are desperate to travel again after withstanding years of pandemic restrictions.
As Spain sees a rebound in inbound tourism, this is notably boosting hotel occupancy rates in the country. Indeed, it is reported that hotel occupancy rates reached 90% during the Easter 2023 period, with increased demand continuing to push up average daily rates (ADRs).
Consumers continue to see a degree of complexity in travel following the two years of pandemic travel restrictions, such as specific requirements to visit a certain country, or air routes being affected by the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. As such, this is resulting in consumers seeking the up-to-date expertise of travel agents and, in turn, resulting in an increase in offline bookings whereby consumers can seek in-person advice.
After a positive year in 2023, it is expected that 2024 will also be strong for travel in Spain, followed by more moderate growth towards the end of the forecast period. High inflation rates and ongoing consumer demand are expected to continue to drive up average unit prices in 2024, and possibly 2025, followed by an expected, optimistic, stabilisation in prices towards the end of the forecast period.
