Travel and tourism was one of the sectors of the Ecuadoran economy most impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in severe losses for industry stakeholders across the travel and tourism industry value chain. Thus, 2022 saw a strong rebound in lodging, booking and travel modes, notably airlines, with small and medium-sized operators rebounding the strongest, having suffered the heaviest losses at the peak of the pandemic.
After the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic began to wear off, the airlines operating in Ecuador sought to expand the frequency of their flights to return to pre-pandemic levels and offer better connections to second-tier airports located in the interior of Ecuador. Latam for instance focused heavily on expanding its domestic routes, while new airline Equair entered the fray with the launch of numerous domestic routes.
During 2022, the recovery of Ecuador’s hotels from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic was interrupted by the national strike and civil unrest that emerged in response to high inflation and widespread anger at the treatment of indigenous people by the government. Some hotels even reported 0% occupancy during the dates when the demonstrations were at their peak.
Online booking continues to gain a higher share of bookings and revenues in Ecuador is travel and tourism industry. Indeed, online bookings gained substantial ground during the COVID-19 pandemic, during which there was a lower flow of people in shopping centres, rendering the travel booking kiosks that account for a substantial proportion of offline bookings essentially redundant for an extended period.
Strong growth in expected to be seen in Ecuador’s travel and tourism industry during the forecast period, with the strong economic recovery that is slated for 2023 set to spur consumer spending, including among Ecuadorians, boasting outbound and domestic tourism, as well as among consumers in key source countries for inbound arrivals. The expansion been seen in air routes, both in terms of frequency of inbound and outbound flights and in terms of the numbers of flights operating on key domestic routes, will allow for growth in tourism flows.
