On 25 March 2020, the Government of Colombia closed all international travel to and from Colombia and restricted domestic travel under a national quarantine that continued until 1 September – which proved to be one of the longest lockdowns globally. International and domestic flights were grounded, except for cargo and humanitarian flights as defined by the government.
While restrictions were lifted in many places during early summer 2020, a nationwide stay-at-home order remained in effect in Colombia several months after first being implemented. The country’s 6-month lockdown has been devastating on many levels, and frustrated citizens have turned to violence, with attacks on medical professionals not uncommon.
Avianca (Aerovias del Continente Americano) continues to dominate airlines overall with 52% value share in 2020, followed by LATAM Airlines (LATAM Airlines Group SA) with 20%. Searca (Servicio Aéreo de Capurgana SA) is the only significant player in charter, holding 61% value share in 2020 having leapt from 27% in 2019.
Aviatur and Despegar.com continue to lead travel intermediaries in 2020, dominating the landscape between them, though with 41% Aviatur holds close to twice the value share of Despegar.
Consumption trends in tourism in Colombia are set to shift rapidly to towards sustainable and eco-friendly travel as consumers will increasingly turn away from crowded cities out of contagion fears and a renewed concern over the damaging effects of over-tourism. Prior to the pandemic, Colombia’s government already had plans in place to leverage the momentum of the country’s expanding tourism industry, and in December 2018 established the Plan for Tourism Sector 2018-22.
