More Peruvians can travel due to access to credit and lower prices

Travel continued to see growth in Peru in 2019, with increases in both inbound arrivals and outbound departures, as well as domestic tourism. This led to strong growth for transportation, lodging, car rental and travel intermediaries, which was also boosted by infrastructure developments.

Events such as CyberDays contribute to growth in online sales

Stronger growth was seen in online than offline sales in all travel categories in 2019, with airlines accounting for the highest sales. The continuous growth of travel sales e-commerce was sustained by increasing internet penetration and online means of payment.

Agreement leads to increasing consolidation in travel intermediaries

Due to the increasing competition in travel intermediaries, and the move by travellers towards booking online, alliances have emerged. For instance, to take advantage of the growth in online sales, but also of the continuing consumer demand for in-person advice, a commercial alliance was agreed between Despegar.

Players offer unique experiences to attract younger travellers

There is a growing trend amongst travellers, especially younger travellers, to seek unique experiences, in a move away from traditional and standard tourism. As a consequence, different alternatives have emerged in recent years which aim to deliver experiences worthy of being shared on social networks, which is fundamental for younger digital consumers.

Continued growth, but further diversification needed

Growth is expected to continue in travel by all measures in the forecast period. Ongoing improvements to the air infrastructure, both in terms of physical upgrading and more routes and greater flight frequencies, will provide the opportunity for more inbound and outbound travel.
