Airline passenger traffic continued to recover in 2022 but remained well below its pre-pandemic level. The war in Ukraine slowed the recovery by unleashing an economic shock that drove a decline in inbound arrivals from Russia and Ukraine.
The number of room nights continued to recover during 2022, coming close to its pre-pandemic level. With the number of sites/outlets remaining well below its pre-pandemic level, occupancy rates rose significantly, from 37% in 2021 to 52% in 2022.
Retail constant value sales (2022 prices) of booking continued to recover during 2022, exceeding their 2019 peak, in spite of disruption arising from the war in Ukraine. Booking continued to shift online in 2022, with the pandemic and widening smartphone ownership and increased mobile internet use serving to accelerate this trend.
Both the number of trips in Turkey and their retail constant value sales will continue to recover throughout the forecast period, but they will remain below their pre-pandemic level even at the end of it. Much will depend on the duration of the war in Ukraine and when and if conditions in the key Russian and Ukrainian markets begin to normalise.
