Executive Summary

Oct 2019
PROSPECTS
Dermatologicals not a strong OTC category

Dermatologicals cover an area of personal health that is quite intimate in nature for the patient. Because of this, Croatians are not prone to experimenting with self-medication and rather resort to seeking advice from professionals.

Antipruritics become more necessary as the incidence of insect bites increases

Antipruritics used to treat insect bites recorded good retail value growth over the review period and into 2019. It is possible that global warming is leading to increased numbers of insects, and that the season for biting/stinging insects is becoming longer, leading to more insect bites among the human population.

Two possible trends for the future

There are two trends that may shape the future of dermatologicals. Firstly, as disposable incomes are rising, consumers are increasingly aware of and willing to invest time and money in their personal appearance, which includes dealing with their skin conditions.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE
Bayer maintains its lead

Thriving on the most popular brand within dermatologicals, Bepanthen, Bayer maintained its strong lead in dermatologicals in 2019. The advantage of this brand, which is predominantly aimed at children, is that it is spread across multiple categories.

Stable competitive environment

With the exception of the two leaders, Bayer and Pliva Hrvatska, no other player held a double-digit retail value share in 2019, although shares remained relatively stable. No major new launches or innovations were witnessed in the category over the year, which led to a great deal of stability in the competitive landscape.

Croatian companies generally weak in dermatologicals

Probably thanks to the very high technological requirements placed on manufacturers of dermatologicals, the reach of domestic companies in the category is low. Apart from some instances within antipruritics and herbal/traditional dermatologicals, Croatian companies are difficult to spot in the competitive environment.
