In 2021, the level of COVID-19 became more serious compared to the previous year in several cities and provinces such as Bac Giang, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh all of which have had to implement social distancing measures for several months during the year. During this period, people had to spend more time at home and were unable to dine out, only able to buy food from consumer foodservice outlets on a takeaway basis.
In 2021, Janssen-Cilag remained the leader in dermatologicals in value terms thanks to its popular Nizoral brand. This brand maintained its lead in topical antifungals, while it also continued to have a strong position in medicated shampoos with Nizoral shampoo, thanks to dynamic marketing activity and its wide distribution network.
At the end of the review period, there was increasing health awareness amongst Vietnamese consumers. Prior to the outbreak, this was a result of various actions taken by the government.
Thanks to little impact from COVID-19 in 2021, dermatologicals is expected to remain on the same growth path over the forecast period, with continued solid but slightly slowing current value growth rates. The anticipated slowdown in growth will mainly be due to maturity, although solid growth is expected to be maintained due to the rising population, and particularly the increase in the older population.
Although the government launched a new regulation in 2018 in which domestic brands are to be prioritised when distributed through the hospital channel with these efforts intended to support local brands, sales via the hospital channel have fluctuated prior to the onset of the virus and have since decreased strongly since COVID-19. Thus, local brands will still struggle to compete due to a narrow distribution network and low financial capability over the forecast period.
Haemorrhoid treatments is expected to see the fastest current value growth rate in the forecast period. Most people suffering from haemorrhoids are in the over 40 age bracket.
