Consumers in Hong Kong are wary of using airborne insecticides, including spray/aerosol insecticides, insecticide coils and electric insecticides. The reason is that they are afraid of inhaling insecticide fumes; hence, they are turning to alternative solutions such as essential oils.
Spray/aerosol insecticides experienced slow current value growth in 2018. Unlike other airborne insecticides, insecticide sprays are not used on an ongoing basis, and are purchased and used as a product of last resort.
Current value and volume sales of insecticide baits dropped significantly in 2018, and are expected to slide even further in the forecast period. According to trade sources, demand for insecticide baits dropped due to consumers’ scepticism of their functionality and usefulness.
Bio Kill has gained share in spray/aerosol insecticides with its odourless and biodegradable formula. Consumers in Hong Kong are wary of home insecticides that could harm the human body, and are concerned that the residuals of these products could poison pets when ingested.
Instead of using a metal aerosol can, Bio Kill is offered in an HDPE plastic bottle with a spray closure. Non-aerosol can solutions are more environmentally-friendly, and the product is also safer to use as it is non-flammable.
Share in home insecticides is highly concentrated amongst three brands – Speedtox, Raid and Baygon – which accounted for nearly three quarters of value sales in 2018. With such a large share distributed amongst these brands, the barrier to entry is high, and it is difficult for new brands to enter home insecticides in Hong Kong.
