PROSPECTS
High rates of mortality from malaria among children below five drives sales

Malaria remains a major public health concern in Cameroon, and causes high rates of mortality among children below five years of age. This constitutes a major driver of demand for home insecticides as a prevention method, especially in cities where housing is poorly ventilated and drainage systems are poor.

Growth in insecticide coils is slowing

Insecticide coils and “other” home insecticides are recording decreasing rates of growth. Although the coil format was previously popular among consumers living below the poverty line, owing to its affordability, coils had a reputation for being highly unsafe in use.

Electric formats will grow as cheaper brands enter the market

Electric insecticides saw the fastest growth in 2018, thanks to the success of cheaper brands which increased product availability. Many high-income consumers will continue to perceive these products as safer, more eco-friendly, convenient and odour-free than coils and spray/aerosol insecticides.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE
Domestic players remain competitive in home insecticides

Domestic manufacturers have a strong presence in home insecticides. This is partly owing to the lower priced products and smaller pack sizes offered by players like SOPICAM.

Modern retail channels reinforce the visibility of international brands

Multinationals like SC Johnson accounted for the lion’s share of value sales in 2018, and will continue to lead the category. These players benefit from offering high quality products and trusted brands.

Lack of new product development will hamper growth

Home insecticides is beginning to see a shift from spray aerosol formats to electric formats. Consumer awareness has increased regarding their properties for killing several types of creeping or flying insects.
