Dengue fever continues to hit Colombia, and, according to the Ministry of Health and Social Protection, some 88,258 cases were reported by September 2020. However, the number of cases could actually be higher as the frequency of medical consultations fell significantly as consumers avoided hospitals and medical facilities due to concerns around the COVID pandemic, although the spread of the dengue virus may also have been limited by the reductions in movement and travel among the population due to the COVID-19 restrictions.
The prevailing weather conditions are a key factor in the performance of home insecticides each year. Colombia is increasingly facing hotter temperatures and heavy rainfall, conditions which result in the proliferation of insects and extended usage of home insecticides throughout the year.
Consumers trust the effectiveness of long-established brands of home insecticides, with the top two brands, Raid and Baygon, both from SC Johnson & Son Colombiana, dominating sales. There is, therefore, little room for private label in home insecticides.
Home insecticides is expected to continue to record strong retail volume growth throughout the forecast period, surpassing the performance witnessed over the review period. Spray/aerosol formats are set to outperform, suggesting that consumers will continue to favour these products over other formats due to the convenient dispersal of the product via the nozzle head, which is widely regarded as among the fastest and most efficient ways to kill insect pests.
Raid’s excellent reputation ensured that SC Johnson & Son Colombiana continued to dominate sales within home insecticides in 2020. Along with an extensive portfolio, including electric, spray/aerosol and other insecticides, the brand has worked on strengthening its image as being reliable for critical tasks such as protecting families from insect-transmitted illnesses.
With consumers becoming increasingly aware of health and wellbeing trends, home insecticides featuring fewer chemicals would be particularly attractive to families with young children and pets. However, this area of home insecticides remains underdeveloped in Colombia and could benefit from further innovation as other countries of the region have shown.
