Home insecticides was the worst performer in home care in 2020, with lower current value and volume growth, compared with 2019. With consumers being increasingly price sensitive due to the economic fallout of COVID-19, consumers prioritised cleaning products over insecticides in order to ensure surfaces were infection free.
State-owned company ALDAR led home insecticides in value terms in 2020. The leading Moubyd brand is widely available and offers affordable prices for basic spray/aerosol insecticides.
Groupe Spi-Sophia remained in second position with its Spi-Mat brand in 2020. The company's success was due to its affordable Spi-Mat electric insecticides, effective against mosquitoes and flies and carrying a pleasant scent.
The availability of a widening range of good-quality spray/aerosol insecticides will continue to hamper the volume growth of electric insecticides, which are also considerably more expensive. Electric insecticides are thus set to see a negligible volume increase over the forecast period, despite the country’s growing insect population.
Home insecticides did not perform well in 2020, as consumers prioritised cleaning products due to COVID-19. However, healthy current value growth is expected over the forecast period, but a part of that growth will be driven by inflation, with lower volume growth over the forecast period, compared with the review period.
The rising urban population and increasingly crowded cities will result in further growth in Algeria’s insect population. Urban waste management systems remained underdeveloped at the end of the review period and are yet to be identified as a primary area for public investment.
Volume growth in home insecticides is expected to gradually decline over the forecast period, due to less disposable income among Algerian consumers. The number of middle-class consumers is predicted to shrink, hampering the growth of home insecticides in terms of volume.
