Executive Summary

Feb 2019
PROSPECTS
Neonicotinoids ban generates adverse publicity

In 2013, the EU placed a moratorium on the use of a number of common chemical compounds that are used in insecticides, both commercially and domestically. In 2018, the EU voted to completely ban the use of neonicotinoids outdoors except in greenhouses due to the alleged harm to pollinating insects.

Extremely un-Irish summer experienced in 2018

Ireland experienced its hottest summer in 40 years in 2018; the longest recorded drought and highest average temperatures were recorded throughout the country. While some categories suffered due to the drought, others benefited in 2018 – sales of water, for example.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE
Private label and discounters continue to win share

Across all retail categories, Irish consumers continue to show strong preferences for private label and discounters for their commodity choices. Although consumers’ disposable income is increasing due to a much-improved economy, discounters maintain the strong foothold they established in Ireland during recession.

Crossover between commercial and domestic insecticides remains

The leading players in home insecticides remain specialised brands despite the increased value share of discounters and private label. Main players McLoughlins RS, Rentokil Initial Plc and Doff Portland Ltd are focused on commercial insecticides and pest control.

Vapona retains its position

Irish consumers are traditionally loyal to indigenous brands or those that are manufactured within the country. Vapona was originally started by Punch Industries Ltd in the 20th century, owned by a prominent Cork family.
