Executive Summary

Feb 2019
PROSPECTS
Threat of malaria leads to increased adoption of home insecticides

Mosquito bites are a cause of great concern to Nigerians as diseases such as malaria are prevalent across the country. Nigerians therefore seek products to eliminate mosquitos from their homes effectively in order to prevent mosquito bites.

Sales heavily dependent on location

Spray/aerosol insecticides is expected to continue growing over the forecast period, with urban populations driving sales. In rural areas, coil formats are more popular based on their affordability and ease of use.

Brand repositions from outdoor insect repellents to indoor home insecticides

In parallel with the emergence of unbranded insecticides from domestic players, another interesting trend by a domestic player was the repositioning of its product from outdoor use to one for indoor use. Given the effectiveness of the brand, consumers began to use it indoors.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE
Unbranded products popular

Leading brands in home insecticides include Rambo by Gongoni Co, Mortein from Reckitt Benckiser Nigeria and Raid by Johnson Wax Nigeria. Gongoni Co’s strong position can be attributed to its wide variety of product offerings, with its paper format being extremely popular, more so in the Eastern, wetter part of Nigeria.

Home insecticide manufacturers repositioning to meet changing market challenges

Given the prevalence of health concerns, particularly malaria attacks, as well as complaints by consumers, home insecticide manufacturers have been diversifying their product offerings to ensure brand loyalty. Sustained population growth and demand for insecticides which kill both flying and creeping insects will likely continue over the forecast period.

Home insecticide consumers support local brands

Some of the leading brands are losing share to smaller, more affordable brands, demonstrating that consumers are easily influenced to try other brands. It is often claimed that leading brands are not keeping to their product claims as product quality continues to decline while prices increase.
