He stated on Triple J’s radio programme Hack that he will never agree to repeal the ban on e-cigarettes, saying "It's not going to be happening on my watch as far as I'm concerned", further noting that "there is clear evidence that it's likely to lead to the uptake of cigarette smoking".
Research indicates that a significant number of Australians are in favour of the government regulating vapour products so that smokers have access to them. Research commissioned by the Australasian Association of Convenience Stores and finalised in September 2016 noted that almost three quarters of Australians (73%) back the legalisation of e-cigarettes as a method of helping smokers kick the habit.
The growth of vapour products in Australia peaked in 2012. The category has posted significantly slower growth rates since then as it has matured and more regulations have been introduced.
The regulation of vapour products continued to differ by state in 2017. However, nicotine continued to be classified as a Schedule 7 poison.
While brand shares in vapour products in Australia have not been determined by Euromonitor International due to strong category fragmentation, industry sources say that there have been changes in the share of some of the largest brands over the past year. Notably, trade sources stated in early 2018 that the shares of KangerTech and SMOK have fallen, with SMOK experiencing issues with quality control.
Internet retailing remained the leading distribution channel for vapour products in Australia in 2017, accounting for more than three quarters of overall value sales. Australians are purchasing vapour products from both local and international internet retailers, with consumers appreciating the broad array of products available and the channel’s economical prices.
