While tank systems remained popular in e-vapour products at the end of the review period, closed pods were beginning to gain significant traction. Closed pods gained in popularity as a result of their ease of use and affordability, as well as an expanding product offer from major players including Japan Tobacco and Imperial Brands.
Demand for e-vapour products was supported by many consumers viewing such products as a smoking cessation aid in 2019. However, in Ireland, debate about the health effects of next generation products continued at the end of the review period.
Japan Tobacco Inc remained the largest player in the fragmented e-vapour products category in 2019, and continued to see share growth during the year as a result of the ongoing shift in its focus from cigarettes to next generation products. The company launched its flagship closed pod product, Logic Compact, in 2019 as a progression of the larger Logic Pro tank system.
Sales of smokeless tobacco, e-vapour products and heated tobacco are now expected to rise by 6% in 2020 in constant 2019 value terms in light of the impact of COVID-19. This compares to growth of 7% forecast for 2020 in the 2019 edition of tobacco.
E-vapour products was responsible for 100% of smokeless tobacco, e-vapour products and heated tobacco sales in the Irish market at the end of the review period. Within e-vapour products, non-cig-a-like closed system (including starter kits) is set to continue to be the fastest-growing category in 2020, supported by the significant manufacturer innovation seen at the end of the review period.
E-vapour products is expected to continue to see significant growth over 2019-2024, though at a considerably slower rate than that seen during the review period. This deceleration will be largely due to the category’s increasing maturity, though increased consumer budget-consciousness in the context of challenging economic conditions will also play a part.
