E-vapour products remain a niche in Nigeria, with their consumption almost exclusively limited to affluent urban consumers. Most of them are not trying to quit smoking but are attracted by trendiness of vaping and the flavours on offer.
There was moderate growth in retail constant value sales of e-liquids during 2021, but they remained below their pre-pandemic level. Amidst a difficult economic environment, some local users of e-vapour products cut back on their usage of e-liquids.
With growing legislation against smoking, including the introduction of pictorial/graphic warnings on cigarette packs, smokeless tobacco and e-vapour products are expected to benefit as consumers seek alternative products which are perceived to be safer. Heated tobacco is currently not present in Nigeria (apart from limited grey market imports), but that is set to change during the forecast period. In 2021, Philip Morris International revealed plans to launch its IQOS brand in Nigeria once it had secured regulatory approval.
Smokeless tobacco is expected to perform robustly over the forecast period, particularly as increased taxation pushes up the cost of cigarettes.
