While smokeless tobacco prices are too prohibitive to be successfully introduced beyond a very small niche segment, and there is a lack of culture for the products themselves in Colombia, it is left for e-vapour products and heated tobacco to represent the overall category. It is not only the perception of vaping being less harmful than tobacco or the wish to quit smoking that is encouraging the development of e-vapour products and heated tobacco.
Heated tobacco is only offered by Philip Morris International Inc in Colombia, via Cía Colombiana de Tabaco SA (Coltabaco). The company has stated that this category is its developmental priority over the forecast period.
E-vapour products continued to register rapid growth in 2019. Much of this trend was underpinned by the development of a vaping culture in Colombia, mainly in large urban centres where specialised bricks-and-mortar stores have expanded.
In 2020, sales of smokeless tobacco, e-vapour products and heated tobacco are now expected to grow by just 26% in constant 2019 value terms in light of the impact of COVID-19. This compares with a 30% rise in sales forecast in Euromonitor International’s 2019 edition of tobacco.
In 2020, the average unit price of tobacco heating devices is poised to rise by double digits, three times above the rate of inflation in a context of considerable economic downturn. This is why this category will be the most hit by COVID-19, though it will not stop it from achieving high volume sales growth from its low base.
As the economy recovers and disposable incomes start to normalise in Colombia, the smokeless tobacco, e-vapour products and heated tobacco category is predicted to return to pre-COVID-19 performance dynamics from 2021. Increasingly so because of the pandemic, consumers will be seeking products suitable for use in private, especially enclosed, space and/or products that allow them to respect the extra-cautiousness of others when the user is in public space.
