Heated tobacco products (tobacco heating devices and heated tobacco) continued to record robust retail volume and value growth rates in 2021, mainly due to being novelty products. Furthermore, heated tobacco has shown the potential to become an important “less harmful” alternative to other tobacco products and a major category in tobacco in the country.
While still registering a very strong rise in current retail value sales in 2021, growth of e-vapour products continued to slow appreciably. The slowdown was mostly due to the fast emergence of heated products from 2018.
Philip Morris Zagreb doo remained the clear leader in heated tobacco products in 2021. The company continued to leverage its first-mover advantage to push the Iqos product range.
E-vapour products and heated tobacco products are predicted to see relatively healthy retail value CAGRs at constant 2021 prices over the forecast period, but these are likely to be much lower than the constant retail value sales growth experienced during the review period. These categories remain quite novel and developing in Croatia; however, increments are expected to be slower than at the end of the review period, as growth is derived from ever higher sales bases.
The retail value sales growth of e-liquids is likely to slow during the forecast period. This is due to the announcement by the government that it may start levying an excise duty on e-liquids at some point during the forecast period.
BAT Hrvatska doo launched its tobacco free oral nicotine (nicotine pouches) brand, Velo, in 2020. The tobacco free oral nicotine category is a novelty and, as such, it registered robust retail value sales and volume growth in 2021, and is expected to have several years of similar growth.
