Although growing from a low base, e-vapour products saw a sharp rise in demand in 2018. This was boosted by an increase in distribution and growing awareness of these products.
Smokeless tobacco continued to feel the effects of the ban on chewing tobacco that was introduced in Pakistan’s Punjab and Sindh provinces in 2016/2017. Those who violate these bans can face fines and imprisonment, or both.
With a rapid rise in demand a host of new online shops have opened in Pakistan looking to cater to this new consumer base. Some of these retailers have also taken an omnichannel approach, such as Le-Vap, in order to reach a larger audience by having both a store-based presence and an online one.
E-vapour products saw tremendous growth over the review period, although demand remain largely limited to urban middle-income men. Nevertheless, the category continued to see regular new product development and new product launches, such as higher quality e-liquids, with there being a large number of players looking to stake a claim in e-vapour products.
E-vapour products remains a highly fragmented category with the leading brands such as SMOK, Joyetech and Vaporesso at the front largely thanks to their reputation for quality and better distribution and their strength in open vaping systems. In terms of e-liquids the competitive landscape is even more fragmented with a wide range of price-points, flavours and brands on offer.
Chewing tobacco also remained a fragmented category in Pakistan in 2018, with regional and unbranded players accounting for the largest share of retail volume sales. The two leading brands Pan Parag Ghutka and JM Ghutka both saw a further decline in retail volume terms in 2018 as they continued to feel the effects of the ban on chewing tobacco in the Punjab and Sindh provinces.
