Consumers’ interest in closed vaping systems, particularly cig-a-likes, continued to decline in 2019 while, conversely, consumers’ interest in open vaping systems continued to grow. Indeed, open vaping systems saw significantly greater current value sales growth than closed vaping systems in 2019.
As in prior years, grocery retailers, particularly supermarkets, held the greatest distribution share of e-vapour products in 2019. But grocery retailers tended to focus on selling a limited range of e-vapour products, such as single use cig-a-likes.
The number of local manufacturers of e-vapour products remained negligible in 2019. For the most part, domestic players in the category included those who processed and packaged e-liquids with flavours developed to appeal to local consumer tastes.
Sales of smokeless tobacco, e-vapour products and heated tobacco are now expected to grow by 18% in constant 2019 value terms in 2020 in light of the impact of COVID-19. This compares to a 30% rise in sales forecast in our 2019 edition of tobacco.
While demand for e-vapour products is slowing as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is nevertheless still expected that sales growth will be relatively robust throughout the remainder of 2020 as consumers continue to be intrigued by what many consider to be high-tech and sophisticated products. Azerbaijani users of open vaping systems tend to enjoy several unique aromas in their e-liquids, and the popularity of these special aromas is helping drive the category-leading growth rate of e-liquids in 2020.
Value sales of e-vapour products are expected to rebound in 2021 with double-digit growth before gradually normalising throughout the remainder of the forecast period. Rather than being affected by pandemic-inspired demand issues, consumers are expected to be attracted to new, sophisticated e-vapour products by promises of better health.
