Despite sales of open vaping systems posting growth over the first semester of 2019, the Ministry of Health’s anti-smoking campaign, which was launched in September 2019, has been encouraging the consumption of all tobacco products, including e-vapour products. Additionally, the outbreak of the vaping crisis in the USA drove open vaping systems sales down during the second semester, seeing declines for the first time since 2014.
After the launch of the closed vaping system My blu from Altadis SA in November 2018, all major tobacco companies launched their closed system products in 2019. These included JUUL from JUUL Labs Inc, Vype ePen from British American Tobacco España SA, and Logic from JT International Iberia SL.
The launch of JUUL from JUUL Labs Inc, in April 2019, was strongly supported by an advertising campaign in Spain, with promotions on prices and sales representatives on site in tobacco specialists. Tobacco specialists is the main distribution channel for JUUL Labs Inc, as the company considers it the best channel to verify the age of the smokers and they do not sell the product in vending machines.
In 2020, sales of smokeless tobacco, e-vapour products and heated tobacco are now expected to grow by 30% in constant 2019 value terms in light of the impact of COVID-19. This compares to a 15% rise in sales forecast in our 2019 edition of tobacco.
The anti-smoking campaign from the Ministry of Health is expected to more strongly impact tobacco products over the forecast period, rather than any impacts from COVID-19 per se. This is pertinent in smokeless tobacco, e-vapour and heated tobacco, as e-vapour products are set to face the same or similar restrictions as cigarettes.
The biggest opportunities in this segment are within closed vaping systems, which have seen an upsurge of new products and fierce competition. This is because players are moving away from the increasingly-unpopular open vaping systems, along with investing less in traditional cigarettes and tobacco products due to the Ministry of Health’s anti-smoking campaign.
