Having boomed during the review period prior to the onset of the pandemic, retail constant value sales of e-vapour products declined during 2020. COVID-19 played a significant role in this, particularly as it came at a time when local media were regularly running stories about potential lung damage from vaping.
Smokeless tobacco is limited to chewing tobacco, with retail value sales very low and in long-term decline. Demand for chewing tobacco is mainly limited to specific ethnic groups in Spain, particularly Indians and Pakistanis.
Heated tobacco products will continue to significantly outperform e-vapour products throughout the forecast period. Local consumers will continue to switch from cigarettes to these products, while a recovery in tourism will provide an additional boost to demand.
Leading player Phillip Morris will continue to invest heavily in heated tobacco to align with its stated twin ambitions of transferring smokers to smoke-free alternatives over the next decade and to ensure that half of its revenue derives from these products by 2025. It has opened IQOS Stores in Madrid, Barcelona and Badajoz, with more expected during the forecast period.
However, Phillip Morris will not have things all its own way in heated tobacco products. Canadian company Poda Holdings has reached an agreement with Landewyck Tobacco to develop a heated tobacco product, and this is likely to be launched in Spain during the forecast period.
